Nomi Nickel from A Complicated Kindness is a challenge for me to describe. Maybe that’s how the author wants to portray her. Difficult. Nomi is a sixteen year old girl living in a town she finds ignorant. The Mennonite town is what it’s called. However, Nomi hates all the religious stuff in her community and rebels it. Her life hasn’t been easy since her mother and sister left without a warning. She is left with her dad who seems dazed most of the time. She has a boyfriend which seems to be turning her more rebellious than she already is. She is a sarcastic and very cynical girl. However she has a twist to her humour. Almost as if joking about everything evil and dark is amusement to her. Surprisingly her name means “beautiful and pleasant” which really is the opposite of what she really is. Most of the things she does is against the town rules. She gets high with her boyfriend and engages in sexual activities which seems to me is the only way for her to ignore the pain of losing her mom and sister.

Nomi seems like an interesting character to read about. I would love to hear some of her rebellious experiences. Also, that is very ironic that her name means "Beautiful and pleasant" but shes the complete opposite!! Well written Desiree : )
ReplyDeleteThis troubled girl, Nomi, reminds me of the anonymous protagonist from the book "Go Ask Alice" who had problems with losses, relationships and drugs. These kind of characters are mysterious and unpredictable at times, it makes you wonder if they will find the courage to do what's right.
ReplyDeleteNomi's story reminds me a lot about the character Elv from "The Story Sisters" by Alice Hoffman. Elv also lives in a town that she despises, engages in sexual activities and pretty much have the same lifestyle. Since I do not personally know someone that has lived through this experience, I think her story would be interesting to read about, when especially she is around the same age as I am.
