A little insight
After we further discussed the culture of the Igbo, it gave me insight of different cultures. What may seem unusual to us may be completely normal for others. I believe most people today are so ignorant of other cultures because of the influences of media, friends, and uneducated assumptions. I still see Okonkwo as an hero. Although some of his actions seem savage to us, it is perfectly fine for the Igbo culture. He is not necessarily a hero that people around the world would be able to recognize but he definitely is a hero in his community. Basically what I'm trying to get at is that people should give other cultures a break. Just because it doesn't seem "normal" to us it doesn't mean what they do is wrong and they should be punished for it. Instead we should all be more understanding that there ARE other cultures and none of them are more superior than others.

A Complicated paragraph.. I mean Kindness :)
My novel A Complicated Kindness is quite different from books I've read in the past. The conflict of this novel revolves around Nomi and the town she lives it. With this being sad, it is clear that the conflict is man vs. society. Nomi's behavior towards her society is pretty straight forward. She does everything possible to oppose the town. She doesn't like how dead and quiet the town is; not to mention that everyone pretty much knows each other. That makes life so boring! She constantly dreams of moving to New York; if only she could turn this into reality. Another conflict she encounters is with herself. With half of her family gone to who knows where, she is left with her dad. Soon her dad leaves her as well. Poor girl, what should she do? Now that her family disappeared, she is left all alone; the person in the family that hates the town the most, how ironic. I have not yet reached to the point where it is resolved, however I am quite excited to see what Nomi does!
The conflict reminds me of my life in a way. Although I do not live in a Mennonite town, I constantly find myself dreading each day because of how boring I know it will be. I find Richmond boring and definitely small as well which is quite like the town Nomi lives in. When I went to Las Vegas during spring break, I fell in love with it! The breathtaking architecture inside the hotels are to die for. Four days was definitely not enough for me! Since I came back from Richmond, I found myself dreaming and dozing off thinking about Las Vegas. Call me crazy but I want to move there when I'm older. It is so full of life even at odd hours, it is definitely a city that never sleeps. With my dream of moving to Las Vegas and thoughts about my city, I find myself relating to Nomi.

Colonization in Africa took place in the 1880s however the entire continent was controlled by Europe by the 1990s. The Europeans were not fond of the native traditions and cultures of Africa. They replaced them with their own. The following generations were raised under colonial power, with that being said it is inevitable that they adopt the Western tradition and culture. This is where post-colonialism takes place. It is what happens after colonialism and the impact of it
Post colonialism is seen in this idea where white is better and superior. The video below is from Tyra Bank's TVs show. It talks about black women bleaching their skin because they believe the more white they are, the more beautiful they are. It is sad to see that these black women go out of their way to put harmful chemicals on their skin just to be "white". It definitely shows that black women are impacted by white culture and they no longer feel beautiful in their own skin. From dying their hair blonde to bleaching their own skin, the idea of beauty for them is "white"..
